Weekend Food Sacks for Children Project

Image goes here.

The goal of this project is to provide a weekend supplemental food sack to every preschool, elementary, middle, and junior high child identified by the school system as hungry. The second goal is for the children to experience the care and love of others. First United Methodist church has taken the leadership role to facilitate this project for 12 years with great community support from churches, civic groups, and individuals who have contributed to this project.

During the 2014-15 school year, we provided an average of 325 sacks per week for a total of 1300 sacks per 4-week period.
Schools receiving food sacks included: Early Head Start, Head Start, Highland Park, Richmond, Sangre Ridge, Skyline, Westwood, Will Rogers, Covenant Community School, and the Junior High.
Total Cost and Averages for the 2014-15 school year were:
Total Number of Food Sacks per 4-Week Period - 1300   (325 per week)
Total Number of Food Sacks for September through May, 2015 - 11,700

Average Cost per 4-Week Period - $5,794.69
Average Cost per Week - $1,448.67
Total Cost of Food for September through May, 2015 - $52,152.25
Average Cost per Sack for 2014/2015 - $4.46

Since 2012, the total number of sacks distributed per school year has increased from 6,835 to 11,700.  Considering this increase, anticipated costs and numbers for the 2015/2016 school year are expected to remain at least the same or to be increased.

How can you participate?
  1. Join the monthly assembly line to fill the food sacks. If you or your group is interested in assisting in this capacity, please contact Linda Blum at (405) 564-0859 to schedule a date. Generally, all of the sacks for a 4-week period are sacked on the first Saturday morning of the month.
  2. Serve to assist in the delivery of the weekly food sacks to the individual schools.  To participate in this capacity, please contact Karen Hinton at (405) 372-8602.
  3.  Serve as a financial supporter.  Checks can be made to FUMC with “children food sacks” noted on the memo line.
  4.  Serve as a prayer partner, focusing on the safety of God’s arms around each child as they leave school on Fridays at 2:50 p.m.

Questions, comments or to reserve your selected volunteer date(s), please contact Karen Hinton at (405) 372-8602.  This project is under the umbrella of the Missions Commission.
